CCCC rounds 3, 4 and 5. Leela with a beautiful win!

CCCC rounds 3 and 4 and 5 were finished. Houdini is on the lead with 5.0/5 while Leela is doing well with 4.0/5.

In round 3 Leela with black against Fizbo, reached a material imbalanced position but with her King exposed she couldn't avoid a perpetual check with a draw.
One of Leela's weak spots is that she is too weak in recognizing perpetual checks that lead to draw, but in this game this wasn't an issue since it didn't cost her anything because the position was draw anyway.
Xiphos with white also drew Stockfish.

In round 4 Leela had a good moment in this tournament as she outplayed Ethereal in a French game providing a very nice win. Some of its moves were very spectacular attacking Chess of deep positional understanding.
Shredder had its first non win result also and Houdini again won with white against Gull so it had 4 points out of 4 games.

You can view the nice analysis of that game by Kingscrusher here also:

Round 5 had some nice games and started with another small surprise(actually in this big hardware draws are common even against Stockfish and an upset is only a loss of the big ones) of Andscacs with white holding and drawing against Stockfish.
Houdini continued its rampage winning with black against Fizbo and it's the only engine that has a perfect score of 5/5.
Ethereal had its moment against Komodo, where Komodo gave very early 2 Pawns for very little compensation, this proved too bad, Ethereal kept the 2 Pawns for only minor initiative of Komodo, and gained the upper hand having a won -Rook plus 3 Pawns versus Knight plus 3 Pawns- endgame with both engines to show +4.00 scores. Yet, Ethereal under the time pressure couldn't find the winning path.

Leela drew with black against Booot in a game with no real emotions, with a dry opening line after 12.Rxd6 where thereafter nothing could happen and nothing noticeable happened.

Leela will now play at around 17:00 UTC.

  2. I appreciate these blog posts a lot! Thanks for them. It's nice to see regular postings about Leela on the site for the casual reader to keep up to speed on what's brewing.

I do wish there was less 'sweeping things under the rug' so to speak, with very little comment on the odd time management behaviour under 'pondering on', leading to drawish games such as those between Lc0 vs. Fizbo and Booot. The early exchanges, fizzling attacks, and unusual massive time advantage (playing mostly on weaker ponder thinking and neglecting using her own time to get the most accurate plans). These were all noteworthy aspects of the tournament so far, but seem to be brushed aside with comments like, "the position was relatively drawish anyway".

Obvious question: Well how did it get so drawish so quickly in the first place? It's freaking Fizbo 1.9, not even the latest version. (Nothing against Fizbo, but it's currently 19th in the standings. Hardly a tough opponent for Leela who can handily defeat Ethereal when Ethereal plays in a similar positional style without early exchanges.)

It worries me that folks, not wanting to express anything negative about our favourite engine, will neglect to focus on 'what went wrong?', and 'where might there have been mistakes made?' Mistakes are nothing to be ashamed of, and can even be a good thing -- so long as one takes the time to learn from them. Ignoring mistakes and being afraid to point them out is a recipe for dysfunction. That's my two cents, anyway.
